Events occurring in the eras following the Merethic Era, however, often have exact dates or years due to the prevalence of record keeping and the development of a quasi-universal system of chronology. Thus, such eras are prehistoric and the occurrence of events during these eras can only be approximated with various degrees of uncertainty. Exact dates of events that occurred in the Dawn Era and the Merethic Era cannot be known as such information does not exist due partly to a lack of record keeping by the then extant societies and mostly due to the partial absence of established chronological systems (calendars, periods, etc.). The five past eras as well as the current can be separated into prehistoric and modern eras according to when civilizations began to record and document significant events. The various historical periods throughout the existence of Aurbis are differentiated into various 'eras', each of arbitrary length according to the conclusions of significant political occurrences such as the end of a monarchic dynasty (see the Second Era and the Fourth Era) or the conquering and unification of societies into a single governmental sovereignty (see the First Era and Third Era).
This turns the Hero of Kvatch from a mortal into a new Sheogorath that has complete control of the realm and all of Sheogorath's power from then on.The timeline page is a record of all notable events known to occur in The Elder Scrolls universe. To prevent this from happening Sheogorath allows the player to mantle using the staff associated with his power. The player then begins helping Sheogorath protect the realm from destruction at the hands of Jyggalag, who ends up being part of a curse that sees Sheogorath destroying and rebuilding his realm every so many years. The DLC sees the player visiting the realm of madness, the Shivering Isles that are dominated by dangerous creatures and strange residents. The process of mantling is not entirely understood by fans of The Elder Scrolls or characters in the games themselves, but the example set by the Shivering Isles DLC provides most of what is known about the process. It sees an Et'Ada passing their power, role, and even identity to a mortal and allowing themselves to simply die off in the process.
